David Eva
Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Eva joined Capstone in October 2013 as Vice President, Development, and progressed to Senior Vice President and later to Chief Executive Officer of Capstone Power Corp., the power subsidiary of Capstone. On January 1, 2017, Mr. Eva was appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer of Capstone and member of the Board. Mr. Eva is responsible for leading the organization’s executive team.

At Capstone, prior to his appointment to Chief Executive Officer, Mr, Eva led the acquisition, development, and construction of eight wind farms, totalling 120 MW, resulting in the successful execution of over $400 million in capital projects. Prior to joining Capstone, Mr. Eva had 10 years’ experience in the power sector, including serving as Project Management Director at Sprott Power Corp., and various roles at predecessor companies, where he contributed to the acquisition, development, financing, construction and operation of over 150 MW of energy projects. Before entering the power industry, David was a management consultant at McKinsey & Company.

Mr. Eva is a registered professional engineer in the province of Ontario, holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, received a Masters of Engineering (M.Eng) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor of Science (BSc.Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from Queen’s University.

Michael Smerdon
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Michael Smerdon serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Capstone Infrastructure Corporation (TSX: CSE), a role he has held since August 2009.

At Capstone, Mr.Smerdon has led the sale, by way of IPO, of Leisureworld Inc.; five asset-level project financings totalling over $270 million; and over $600 million of corporate-level equity and debt financing to support Capstone’s growth strategy. He currently serves as one of Capstone’s representatives on the board and audit committee of Bristol Water PLC, a regulated water utility in the UK.

During his time at Macquarie, Mr. Smerdon served as a key member of the senior management team of New York-based Macquarie Infrastructure Partners Inc. (MIP), which manages two infrastructure funds totalling US$5.5 billion of investor capital. His responsibilities included managing Macquarie’s North American port investments as well as leading the capital raise and structuring for Macquarie Infrastructure Partners II. Prior to his role with MIP, Mr. Smerdon was responsible for managing a number of Macquarie’s infrastructure businesses, including the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, Atlantic Aviation, Leisureworld and Parking Company of America Airports, among others, where he was involved in the acquisition, directed business planning, financial and operational reporting, capital structure management, risk management and governance, including serving on each business’ board of directors, and ultimately led the sale of each of those businesses.

Mr. Smerdon holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Jack Bittan
Executive Vice President, Business Development

Jack Bittan is responsible for Capstone Infrastructure Corporation’s (TSX: CSE) business strategy and development initiatives globally, including leading the evaluation, negotiation, and financing processes for potential acquisitions. Jack led Capstone’s acquisitions of Clean Power Income Fund, Amherstburg Solar Park, Värmevärden (Swedish district heating portfolio), Bristol Water and Renewable Energy Developers Inc.  In addition to these responsibilities, he leads a team of asset management professionals responsible for Capstone’s utilities businesses, oversees the company’s power development initiatives and serves on the board of directors of Värmevärden and Bristol Water.

Mr. Bittan was formerly a Managing Director of Macquarie Canadian Infrastructure Management Limited and served as Chief Financial Officer of Macquarie Essential Assets Partnership (MEAP), an unlisted infrastructure fund with investments in regulated utilities and public-private partnerships.  In this capacity, he was responsible for day-to-day operations including asset management, capital structure, risk management, reporting and stakeholder management.  He also led the fund’s strategic initiatives, most notably its successful realization efforts.

As a senior member of the Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets division in Canada, he was responsible for the evaluation, acquisition and management of infrastructure investments in North America.  In his seven years with Macquarie, Mr. Bittan played an integral role in the acquisition and operation of diverse infrastructure businesses in Canada and the U.S., including regulated utilities, renewable energy, transportation and social infrastructure.  Mr. Bittan formerly served on the board of directors of several infrastructure and utility businesses including AltaLink, Access Roads Edmonton and Sea to Sky Highway.

Mr. Bittan holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Management degree from the University of Toronto.  He is also designated as a Chartered Professional Accountant (Ontario) and Certified Public Accountant (Colorado).

 

Aileen Gien
General Counsel & Corporate Secretary

Aileen Gien is the General Counsel & Corporate Secretary of Capstone Infrastructure Corporation and provides legal and corporate secretarial services to the corporation.

Prior to joining Capstone, Ms. Gien was a member of the legal team at Infrastructure Ontario, where she had a lead legal role in the development of the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit line, the largest public-private partnership project in Canada to date, and the procurement of Providence Care Hospital, an $810 million hospital in Kingston, Ontario. Ms. Gien has also held associate lawyer positions in Torys LLP’s infrastructure and energy department, Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP’s financial services department and Chadbourne & Parke LLP’s project finance group. On a pro bono basis, Ms Gien also represented Evergreen in connection with the financing of the redevelopment of the former Don Valley Brick Works building and industrial pad in Toronto, Ontario.

Ms. Gien holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree, with distinction, in Finance from McGill University, and a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia Law School. She also holds a Parker School Certificate for Achievement in International and Comparative Law.

Andrew Kennedy
Chief Financial Officer, Capstone Power Corp.

Mr. Kennedy joined Capstone in November 2010 as Vice President, Finance and still holds this position, as well as being the Chief Financial Officer of Capstone Power Corp., Capstone’s power subsidiary. In his current role, Mr. Kennedy provides leadership in all areas of finance and risk management, as well as partnering on strategy for the organization’s power business.

Prior to joining Capstone, Mr. Kennedy had 10 years' experience with Ernst & Young in Canada specializing in public company financial reporting and complex accounting matters. Andrew is a Chartered Professional Accountant and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario and a licenced member of the American Institute of CPA’s, in Illinois. In addition, he has a Bachelor of Arts degree specializing in Economics, with cooperative education and accounting options from the Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Canada.
